To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to be sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one - not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safely in the casket or the coffin of your selfishness. But, in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, unredeemable. The only place outside heaven where you can be safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love, is hell.

An ode to my parents

I couldn't resist buying this today after reading all the rave reviews about it:

Vitasence Pore Clarifying Essence

Extremely effecting in preventing pimples as well as banishing blackheads, our Pore Clarifying Essence is gentle even on the most sensitive skin. Natural herbal actives are used to balance sebum levels while softening, unclogging and refining the pores. Your skin also regains its healthy bio-system with the elimination of acne-causing bacteria. Use regularly to enjoy visible improvements in skin complexion and morale.

Actually, my darling daddy paid for it. It was quite sweet really; my mom had gone out shopping with her friend so it was just me and my dad tonight. They take me out to dinner or lunch on the weekends whenever I'm too busy to go home. I had my card out as I was waiting for the cashier to round up my purchase, but my dad beat me to it, pulling out two crisp fifty dollar notes and placing them in my palm. Since Vitasence is having a 25% discount on its entire range as part of a Christmas special, I only accepted one note.

Ok I'm digressing. What I meant to say was, my dad's gesture almost made me cry. It's not as if he's even moderately well-to-do; my parents earn a decent but tough living in a private canteen. Yet there's the fact that he'd readily splurge a day's earnings on his only child. It makes me ashamed for not being half as good a daughter as the father that he is to me. I resolve to be more appreciative of my parents from now on.

Ok, enough of the guilt trip. It makes me feel a little better knowing at least that I'm working and trying my darndest not to be a burden to my parents. Every time they see me, they ask me if I need money. And I take pride in saying "no". I won't turn down little gifts, because after all I really am still an impoverished student, but I won't take money from my parents unless I'm really down to my last dollar. It kind of sucks sometimes when I compare how little I'm earning as a JCM in-house model as compared to freelancers, but I suppose one must be thankful for the little blessings that one has. If anyone reading this has contacts for the kind of work that I do, please do feel free to drop me an email. I want to earn enough to start saving and to start contributing to my family, rather than just supporting myself.

Comments:
if you want to save money and support parents, spend less.

You're tempting me to launch into a philosophical diatribe about the meaning of life.

Anyway, I don't fundamentally disagree with the "absolute" truth in what you say, but read in this particular context, it lacks the understanding of relativity. In a nutshell, the biggest fallacy in your statement is that of ignorance.

FIRST: What makes you think I'm not already making a conscious effort to control my spending? I earn on average $500 a month and close to nothing during the exam period since I turn down all assignments. I may seem like a compulsive shopper and a frivolous spender, but I exercise restraint and limit myself to $150 a month.

SECOND: If I earn only $500 a month, I think it is really beyond reason to expect me to scrimp and save in order to be able to "save money and support parents". I'm an undergraduate, not a working woman. One has to have reasonable expectations of another person, and I think in this case it is entirely unreasonable to expect me to spend any less than I already am spending.

THREE: Just a short bit about the meaning of life. Life is short, we live and we die, and I do believe that there is no purpose to it. So the best we can do is to experience life to the fullest. I subscribe to the doctrine of moderation, which involves spending and indulging within limits - not in excess, and certainly not total deprivation. The solution that you have proposed would entail a life of deprivation, and I do believe that would be a very miserable and utterly meaningless existence.

Anyway, I do respect your views, but I can't help reacting somewhat acrimoniously to the assumptions that you have made. My life has not been peachy, even if I do write chirpy and bimbotic entries. This is why it rankles whenever someone makes sweeping statements about me that are not grounded in an intimate knowledge of my life, my character, and all that jazz.

it was just a suggestion, not an order. don't get offended: )

Even now at my age (not disclosing =D ), whenever my parents offer to pay something or even buy something for me without me asking do make me feel likewise. Funny but how true. No matter what they do, always bring warmth to our heart as they want us to lead a happy life!

Hi Ying, this is totally OT & quite a silly question. Regarding about the lifecella mask that you've used. They mention in the instruction to feel away the adhesive layer. So do we apply the adhesive side or the other side on our face? :)

Anon2: That's true - parents can be so wonderful. :)

Anon3: I discard the plastic sheet after peeling it off. Then I use the mask with the gel-side on my face. :)

p/s I am Anon 2 & 3. I <3 digging into your entries. Adessa/Renee :P

LOL! All the anons make me so confused. grin. Oh btw did I mention that the Watson's christmas sale ends 25 Dec? So the Lifecella masks will be on promo until then. Heh. :D But I think I'm going to just start using the Vitasence regime... it sounds super good. BUT expensive. UGH.

*LOL* I am not annon 1, I've forgotten my password so I post using anon :D Sorry for the confusion. I don't think you have mentioned that the watson sales ends 25 dec but now that I know so meaning VitaSence will also be having 25% off from their range?? Now I am so tempted to try their products!!! Seems so good after the raves in cozycot!!! But imagine buying all 5 items at a go!? My wallet will be "crushed" on a verge of no return... - Adessa

Adding : I just bought 2 sets the lifecella whitening mask. Can't wait to try them tonight!! Hopefully it works well for me.. *ack* If not I know who I can sell them to :P - Ade

Yup the Vitasence promo will also be until 25 Dec. 25% off is really good considering how expensive their products are. :/ But apparently they work so well that you don't even need facials, so if that's true, I think it's worth spending, considering how much I spend on facials. GRR. Oh if you buy >$200 (which is quite possible if you buy 5 products like you said) you get some free tonic thing, sounds good! Terribly tempting.

Oh good luck with the Lifecella masks! I only start seeing results after using about 4 masks... more radiant skin! So I suppose the whitening works. After every usage my skin feels nice and cooling and the next day it's not oily (sign of moisturised skin?), but just one-time usage doesn't produce significant results. :)

Precisely, their products are slightly more exp as compared to DRx. However if their products really work so well, it justified to splurge for a better skin. My package for DRx finished & it's so utterly so exp to sign up for a new course so I opt for PTR. So far so good. Pray tat it works well. Some of em mentioned that the watson's SA is not even aware of the promo. I never use tonic/toner so if it's given to me free! Why not?? :P (I am a cheapo!)

update: Tried the Lifecella mask, the bad thing about it is that it's kinda "heavy" so it keeps falling off. After usage, skin feels so smooth. I will try a couple more times. If 2 sets cost $13 odd (original price). *cuts throat* I will rather continuing using Juz100's mask. - Ade
