To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to be sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one - not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safely in the casket or the coffin of your selfishness. But, in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, unredeemable. The only place outside heaven where you can be safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love, is hell.

Hotels

Quick happy post before I go off to bed!

We managed to get our room for the Mercure Hotel Pattaya after all, albeit at a higher price. But it's still a steal, considering that it's high season and even the dodgy hotels are charging nearly as much.

We settled our accommodation for Bangkok as well. It was supposed to be Suk11 at first, but I waited in vain for a reply after emailing them my reservation request, so I thought I should try to get a room elsewhere before all the hotels start filling up. This is Suk11:

I know it doesn't look like much, but it's a hostel that comes highly recommended. Prime location, lovely people, clean rooms, and a rustic appeal. And breakfast is a cosy gathering as opposed to the informal buffet breakfasts that hotels offer. It would have been fun to just sit around and have a friendly chat with fellow travellers. Meeting new people, especially from another culture, is always interesting.

In any case, fortunately for us, there's a new hotel in Bangkok and we booked our room at a low promotional rate - same price as Suk11 (700 baht! less than $30!), includes buffet breakfast and free internet access. As for comfort - well, the rooms look rather more inviting than Suk11's:

So that's where we'll be staying for our Bangkok trip! I was entertaining the idea of booking a room in a boutique hotel just for one night as a surprise treat for the boy, but in the end it just didn't make much sense. Even though the appeal of the themed rooms was quite irresistible, the rooms were just too expensive (relatively, anyway, considering that they're three to four times the price of our room at Bangkok City Suite) and we wouldn't be spending enough time in the room to justify spending that sum of money. Plus, checking in and out's an additional hassle. Oh well. Anyway, here are my three favourite rooms from Reflections Thai:

Good night!
