To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to be sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one - not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safely in the casket or the coffin of your selfishness. But, in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, unredeemable. The only place outside heaven where you can be safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love, is hell.

"Light" makeup

On Friday I had an audition and was told to turn up in "light" makeup. Now, after having joined this industry, I've come to understand "light" and "heavy" makeup rather differently. I'm not much of a makeup girl - I can't live without concealer, but everything else I can sacrifice. Even when I have the luxury of time, I prefer not to use colours.

What used to be my definition of "light" makeup was a very sheer base, some blush, lipgloss, mascara, and eyeliner. As for "heavy" makeup, I'd use a full coverage base, plus all of the above, but spend more time contouring my cheeks and shading my eyes with different colours. Unfortunately, even my "heavy" makeup look is considered too light by JCM. I've since learnt to be more heavy-handed with my application. It can look quite awful in real life - which is why I wouldn't opt for it if I had a choice - but it really does photograph quite well and is great for shows. Iris tells me each time she sees me that my makeup technique has improved, but the truth of the matter is, I've just been using more. These JCM models think more is more.

Anyway, as I was saying before I got a little sidetracked, I had an audition on Friday. I took pictures for my new "light" makeup, which is basically the same as the old, just with a heavier base and more mascara. I'll start with my freshly-washed face:

Now you know why I can't live without concealer.

Setting the base: Shu Uemura brow pencil, MAC Hyper Real Foundation, and ZA compact foundation. Yep, TWO layers of foundation! Well at least it's a good colour match so it doesn't look too much like a mask.

More: MAC sheertone blush, Dior Addict lipgloss, MAC eyeliner, and L'oreal Double Extension mascara.

Done!

I'd meant to post this earlier, but I've been too busy. And then, to my horror, I found that Xiaxue posted a similar entry just yesterday. Obviously she doesn't think much of "shu nus" like myself, who prefer to keep it simple and natural. Do check out her entry - it's makeup of an entirely different dimension altogether. Personally, I disagree with about half of everything she does, but I found it an interesting read nonetheless.

Comments:
hi ying,

did u see a doctor regarding ur eye circle problem or use a good eye cream? :)

eileen

i have terrible dark rings too!
totally can't live withogut concealer!

i use the body shop stick concelaer..
its ok..
but i guess its the application tat matters..
so..can you like tell me and provide a picture of the concelaer you use...
and how you apply it..
do you like put a moisturizer before applyting the concealer or..
apply the foundation ferst b4 the concealer?

help!

~continue

i also have to poitn out tat..
after i put on the concealer and make up and stuffs..

the concelaer will liek turn all
cakey..
and how do i make the concealing lasT?

because after a period of time due to the heat and wadnot..
the concealer begins to fade away.. revealing unsightly drak rings!

so much for concealing it =(

Wow ying,

You're real brave to post your pre-makeup look on blog..

But then again dont we all have panda eyes? :b Practically all hostelites will have eye bags due to the crazy night life la.

Just take care and catch some good sleep when u can k? :)

eileen:

I've tried, but it's not a lifestyle problem, it's mostly genetic. I've had dark eye circles since young - got it from my mom's side. There's nothing that eye creams can do to eradicate them, and even surgery can't offer any solution. I just have to live with it and stock up on concealer!

Anon: I'll update soon. :)

Junne: Oh well, I didn't really want to hide behind makeup my whole life. It's something that I prefer to have on, but ultimately it's not the real me. Without makeup, it's still the same features, just less defined, and less perfect (in terms of flaws like skin blemishes, dark eye rings, and so on). Doesn't take a lot of courage! :) But my dark eye rings have very little to do with my lifestyle. I've had them since forever, and I sleep more than most hostelites!

Oh okay.. Nonetheless, you're still the pretty ying whom i know of. Just realized that i've known you since the silly sec school irc days! Its odd i didnt realize earlier. Haha..until i stared harder at your pics, that is. :b

so, hello! *waves* :)

junne

OMG. ok let me guess. #ri2g98?!?! I can't really remember. Clue me in?

Ugh, my eye rings are 10 times darker than yours.

Terence ever told me before that you're the MAKE UP PRO! and now that ive seen it.. i really have to agree.. *nods profusely* hahaha..

Mmm, One question.....

"Concealer: Kesalan Patharan Undertone Lightup - I blend the orange together with the yellow in equal amounts on the back of my hand, then pat it onto my dark eye circles. Over this, I use MAC Select Coverup concealer for a natural finish that matches my skin tone"

How much are these respectively? :D Any pictures of these?

My goodness, twerp said something nice about me? Lol. I'm amazed.

Kesalan Patharan, approximately $42 for a set. Looks like this:

And MAC Select Coverup, about $25:

Good luck finding that perfect concealer! I find that this combination is the best so far for hardcore dark eye circles. :)

Yep #ri2g98. Can you believe it?!!
Such a small, small world. :) Plus i went to Rj too, and have seen you around then - though we NEVER conversed or even said Hi! :/

See, I couldnt even recognise you immediately with all your pretty pics. :b

Hmm lemme think. I think the last time i saw you, you were mugging at the Old RJ canteen.. Haha. Got lots to catch up with you babe! :)

ur dior lipgloss looks great? whats the shade, pray tell? ;)

junne: I don't believe it! You were in RJ too?!? I never even realised. Send me a pic! feine84@yahoo.com.sg :) Do you know that Chen Yong is in my hall now? Goodness. And Sze is in NUS. Heh.

Nicole: It's the Dior Addict Plastic gloss in #224, but the glosses don't look the same on everyone. Do go down to the counter and test the glosses on your lips to find the most flattering shade! :)
