To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to be sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one - not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safely in the casket or the coffin of your selfishness. But, in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, unredeemable. The only place outside heaven where you can be safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love, is hell.

miscellaneous updates

tuesday

alien abduction

met up with the boy for dinner. he is so full of shit, i tell you. i was telling him about one of our ehoc games that requires a bit of detective work on the part of the freshmen. while on the subject of clues, i told him that sometimes you don't see what is most obvious. he then dramatically exclaimed, "is it? but i can see that there is something very good in front of me leh." i could only shake my head in exasperation.

he continued to talk cock for the rest of dinner. at one point, he just stopped eating, stared at my face and commented, "you're really very pretty." i can't believe this is the same guy who never has anything nice to say, who's always taking the mickey out of everything, and who's never ever serious about anything. CAN I PRETTY PLEASE HAVE MY BOYFRIEND BACK? i'm so not used to this.

movie

kelvin (his jc mate) joined us for a movie. initial d was amazing! the guys were drooling over the racing scenes and the cars. no prizes for guessing what i spent the entire movie ogling.

wednesday

facial

booked a long overdue facial. i have soft, smooth skin now! i love Modern Beauty Salon, and not just for the quality and value of its facial. the luxury of the decor is a plus: opulent silk in rich colours combined with classic teak furniture makes for a very nice touch to a pampering ritual. then there's the facial itself, which includes eyebrow trimming as well as massage - head, shoulders, arms, face, and eyes.

sure, it seems like a frivolous expense. i paid $1200 for a 20-treatment package. that's $60/treatment. the boy would shake his head in disapproval. but this does so much to restore my well-being that to me it's money well-spent. it doesn't just do wonders for my skin; it's also a therapeutic indulgence. it's certainly a welcome break from the drudgery of everyday life. i walk out of that place utterly satisfied each time.

jcm

i rushed down to jcm for session 1 of the modelling course, only to have it start at almost 8pm. this was supposed to commence at 7pm and end at 9pm. !@#$ what a waste of time.

the class itself was actually pretty fun. we learnt poise (sitting, standing, greeting) as well as catwalk basics. the best bit was actually the new girls i met. there's tasha (i'm quite positive i got the spelling of her name wrong though), a gorgeous 18-year-old. she's got chiselled, sensuous features: deepset eyes with lush lashes, high cheekbones, a defined nose, and full lips. add to that a full head of luxurious brown curls and a voluptuous figure that's slim yet with curves in all the right places - that's how much of a headturner this girl is. she's the most gorgeous indian girl i've seen - even prettier than aishwarya rai, in my opinion. she's got so much potential that i couldn't help thinking it's a waste that she signed on with jcm. but i guess height is a major factor - she's only 1.63m tall. she's really sweet and down-to-earth, so i'm really looking forward to working with her.

then there's seraphina. she's all woman, with honey brown curls that hang at her waist, feral slit-eyes, a husky voice and a throaty laugh. she was actually one of FHM's girls next door, so that gives some idea of what a minx this girl is. what's really fascinating about her is that underneath that foxy maneater facade is a little imp of a girl. she's refreshingly spontaneous and sweet, and bursts into girly giggles at every other thing. amazingly, she's been in this line for three years and she's only seventeen years old. that probably explains the paradoxical blend of maturity and innocence that is seraphina.

clubbing

i must have gone out of mind to even consider it but there's no resisting the call. i received a message from my usual clubbing kaki begging for a night out at 10ish and we left at 11ish. yes i know, i'm utterly incorrigible.

i was super tired and i had the moe course the next day but i went ahead against my better judgment. we hit dbl o, phuture, then cheeky monkeys. dbl o had terrible music as usual, but we were there just to load up on free shots so i'm not complaining. we moved on to phuture for some serious dancing but the place was too damn packed to even move so we headed to cheeky monkeys instead. as luck would have it, it was a slow night at cheeky's - a little too empty for my taste. bloody hell.

to cut a long story short, i ended up being more sleepy than sloshed and we headed back after a not-so-exciting night of clubbing. quite a waste of money, really.

thursday

moe

i had to wake up at an ungodly hour for this. add to that the after-effects of an alcohol binge and you'll understand how it was a struggle for me to stay awake throughout the seminar. i made an effort in the beginning to pay attention to the talk on policy changes in education but the talk on NE (that's national education for the uninitiated) just put me to sleep.

i didn't have any trouble staying alert when the principal of shuqun secondary school stepped up though. this lady is an absolutely amazing speaker - she has absolutely no presence at all, and yet she commands your attention by sheer force of her down-to-earth manner and humour. the students at shuqun are very, very lucky indeed to have her - she came across as someone who really cared, and she runs the school in a most innovative and efficient way.

she was the one person who made the entire seminar a rewarding experience for me. her speech drove home all the reasons that i'd signed on the dotted line for. it wasn't for the money; it's for the difference that i can make. as she put it, a teacher is the one person that everyone will come into contact with in their lives at one point or another. hence the influence that teachers have - and it is up to us to use this power to make a meaningful difference to the people that we can reach out to.

club momo

after the moe seminar, i rushed down to club momo with tasha for an audition. they're having a fashion show for ladies' night next wednesday, and jeffrey wanted both of us to give it a try. all i can say is... WTF was he thinking?!?

see, tasha and i have no catwalk experience at all. we've only attended one session of the modelling course, where all we learnt was a very basic walk with a half turn. without music. we were in no way prepared to go on the catwalk for a show. but jeffrey told us we were fine, and sent us to club momo.

when we got there, we were told that the models would be wearing very slinky and sexy clothes for the fashion show, and that we could even dance on the catwalk if we wanted to. er... right. then to my horror, they played a techno track with an unbelievably fast beat and told me to catwalk to it. i tried my best, really, with the walk and the half-turn, but it was woefully inadequate. i couldn't get the rhythm right - it was the first time i was walking to any kind of music, and here they were playing the most godawful track. i'm absolutely positive they're not calling me back.

but i'm kinda glad i went la. it highlighted the fact that i was way too inexperienced and that i really need to practice, practice, practice. i'm all inspired to learn more now. PLUS! i bumped into liz, who's working at club momo as an events executive, and she told me to let her know whenever i wanted to come down so she could put me on the guestlist. yay!
