To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to be sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one - not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safely in the casket or the coffin of your selfishness. But, in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, unredeemable. The only place outside heaven where you can be safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love, is hell.

new toy... and a tribute to dad.
i finally got myself a new phone!
i met up with my dad at the singtel store today to get the nokia 7260. speaking of which, my dad is such a total sweetie. i told him i'd call him once i reached the place and got a queue number, so that by the time he joined me he wouldn't have to wait too long until it was our turn.
instead, he did the reverse. he called me while i was still on the bus to tell me he was already there, and he was seated patiently in a corner when i finally arrived. then to top it off, he offered to pay for my phone. i declined because i would be fully reimbursed for the phone anyway (as a belated 21st birthday present from a friend), but i was really touched. after all, as a hawker he works really hard with very little to show for it, and yet he thinks nothing of splurging on me.
my dad's really quite cool. he's given me everything i asked for, as long as it was within his means and within reason. he's given me the freedom to do whatever i wanted, as long as i kept him informed about what i was up to. he's never given me the pressure of expectations, but instead trusted me to know my priorities and do him proud as best as i could. i couldn't have asked for a better dad; it was growing up in precisely this kind of climate that allowed me to do well academically.
realising how wonderful a father i have makes me really contrite for not having been the best daughter. i haven't broken my parents' hearts or done anything like leave home, but i could be a lot nicer to them. for one, i really should spend more time with them. they're getting on in years (my mom had me when she was 36 - my parents are both around 60 now) and they're already showing signs of deteriorating health. i'm particularly worried about my dad - he keeps complaining of aches and pains, and he's been such a heavy smoker all his life that he coughs badly in his sleep. i know i'll lose them someday but i'd rather that day never came.
